Y Fork, Trailer Saver Extra Padding On our covers

What does this mean...Y fork or a Trailer saver?

In summary this is called many different names depending on where you are in the World, but what it is is a device to protect the motor from bouncing around when trimmed up in the towing or traveling position. Most of them have a 'Y' fork component and usually attach to the trailer at the rear just under the motor.

In recent years they have got a little more sophisticated by adding in "shock absorbers" to the Y fork, but they all are designed to do the same job as the manufactures locking down device, just some use their on rough roads and prefer a fitted Y fork holder or trailer saver.

Y fork or trailer savers
" A typical Y fork or trailer saver device "
  1. You need to pad the trailer saver or Y fork (marked in yellow below) with either foam or rubber padding as outlined in RED on the diagram below. This will help prevent rubbing on our covers.

  2. By also adding this padding it will ensure that the zip pictured in the diagram below in GREEN is not crushed when inserting the motor leg into the Y fork or trailer saver.

  3. Once the leg is placed into the travelling position please ensure that you also use a tie down to stop the motor leg jumping or moving in the Y fork or trailer saver. Movement causes rubbing and this will wear through the cover over time.

  4. We will add another layer of material usually between the prop and just above the cavitation plate.

" We would always recommend you pad the 'Red' parts above, so you don't crush the zip on our full covers "

At Outboard Covers Australia customer kept asking for a little more padding around where the Full Cover leg and the Y fork meet to prevent wear in the covers leg.

We were happy to say after all these suggestions we took this on board and now offer extra padding normally just above the cavitation plate about 5 inches up. This way if the leg of the motor is NOT locked into position tightly and the leg bounces in the Y fork the cover will not be totally wrecked, but have extra padding to protect the leg and cover from damage.

Padding is a lose term as all we do is sew an extra piece of material on each side of the leg. The cost is very affordable to prevent Y fork ware.
